Kenya, September 14, 2026 - Rain will fall across 22 counties between 15 and 21 September 2026 as Kenya moves deeper into preparation for the October–December rainfall season, even as most of the country stays dry under sunny skies.
The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA) forecasts morning showers along the coast, afternoon thunderstorms across the western highlands, and sunny intervals throughout northern Kenya for the week ahead.
Coastal counties including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu will see morning showers, while afternoon showers and thunderstorms may strike parts of Baringo, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Bomet, Kisumu, Kericho, Nyamira, Kisii, Migori, Narok, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia.
Scattered afternoon showers are also possible in Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, Mombasa and Tana River, with night showers affecting a few areas of Kilifi, Mombasa, Kakamega and Bungoma.
Sunny intervals will dominate most parts of Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir, Garissa, Kajiado, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Homa Bay, Siaya, Taita Taveta and West Pokot, where little to no rainfall is expected through the week.
Daytime maximum temperatures above 30°C are forecast for Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Turkana, while night-time minimum temperatures below 10°C are expected in parts of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Taita Taveta and Kajiado.
Nairobi will see a maximum of 29°C and a minimum of 10°C, while Mombasa reaches 31°C during the day and 21°C at night, and Kisumu hits 34°C in the afternoon before dropping to 17°C after sunset.
Nakuru will experience 30°C maximum and 12°C minimum temperatures, Eldoret 27°C and 10°C, Garissa 36°C and 23°C, Wajir 36°C and 21°C, and Mandera 38°C and 24°C.
Lodwar will reach 37°C during the day and 25°C at night, Nyahururu 26°C and 4°C, Kitale 30°C and 7°C, Kericho 28°C and 9°C, and Kisii 32°C and 15°C.

Thika will see 31°C maximum and 11°C minimum temperatures, Machakos 29°C and 12°C, Voi 31°C and 18°C, Malindi 30°C and 23°C, Lamu 32°C and 23°C, and Marsabit 26°C and 15°C.
Moyale will reach 30°C during the day and 17°C at night, Makindu 31°C and 14°C, Laikipia 30°C and 10°C, Suba 32°C and 22°C, Msabaha 30°C and 23°C, Mtwapa 29°C and 21°C, Embu 29°C and 14°C, Meru 26°C and 14°C, Nyeri 27°C and 11°C, Kangema 26°C and 13°C, and Kakamega 33°C and 15°C.
Last week, between 31 August and 6 September 2026, most of Kenya remained dry, with rainfall recorded only in Bungoma, Nyandarua, Kwale, Narok and Kilifi.
Kibabii University in Bungoma County recorded the highest seven-day rainfall total of 90.3mm, including 41.8mm in 24 hours on 4 September 2026.
Mandera recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.4°C on 6 September 2026, while Nyahururu recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 4.4°C on 1 September 2026.
KMSA says the window for preparedness ahead of the October–December 2026 rainfall season is now, and urges communities, businesses and county governments to use weather information to plan ahead, protect lives and livelihoods, and take action before hazards occur.
The authority advises users to combine this seven-day forecast with daily (24-hour) and five-day forecasts for more detailed planning, and notes that county-specific forecasts are available from the offices of respective County Directors of Meteorological Services.
