Mogadishu, 24 September 2026 The Speaker of Somalia's House of the People, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, laid the foundation stone for new prison facilities at the army's reconnaissance and intelligence command in Mogadishu on Wednesday, the military said.
Nur, who is serving as acting president, met senior army and defence ministry officials during the visit. Their talks focused on security in Mogadishu, strengthening the capital's defences and improving coordination among security and defence agencies, according to the military's statement.
He was accompanied by Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, State Minister for Defence Omar Ali Abdi and Somali National Army commander Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud. Military court officials and the commander of the reconnaissance and intelligence command, Ahmed Abdullahi Nur, known as Beeryare, also attended.

The military said the planned prison facilities would serve the command and form part of efforts to improve army infrastructure. In a separate statement, the House of the People described the project as a prison for army officers that would complement a facility established there by the Armed Forces Court.
The command's headquarters opened in September 2025. Neither statement gave a construction budget, capacity or completion date for the prison facilities.
