Somalia, 2o June 2026 – The Somali Future Council said it had approved a transitional direct election model that it wants used to help resolve Somalia’s political deadlock over the electoral process.
In a statement issued on June 20, 2026, the council said the proposed model, which it called the Transitional Direct Elections Model, was intended to produce an inclusive, negotiated election with political legitimacy.
The council said its decision was based on what it described as a political compromise and consideration for Somali citizens who want a swift agreement on the election dispute.
According to the statement, the proposed model would combine the right of Somali citizens to directly elect their representatives with the preservation of the 4.5 clan-based power-sharing formula.
