Somalia, 12 May 2026 – Somalia’s disaster agency warned of severe thunderstorms and flash floods in Puntland’s Bari and Nugaal regions between May 12 and May 17.
In an emergency weather advisory issued Tuesday, SoDMA said districts including Hafuun, Eyl, Dangoroyo, Bandarbayla, Qardho and Garowe could experience heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning storms.
The agency also warned of rough sea conditions and disruptions to transportation and fishing activities along coastal areas.
The agency urged residents to avoid unnecessary sea travel and advised fishermen to move to safer locations until the warning period ends.

SoDMA also called on communities living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert and follow official safety guidance issued by authorities.
Parents were advised to keep children and vulnerable people away from hazardous areas, while residents were urged to secure weak structures and temporary shelters against strong winds.
The agency said it would continue monitoring weather developments and provide further updates if conditions worsen.
Somalia frequently faces extreme weather events linked to climate variability, including floods, droughts and tropical storms that affect vulnerable communities, infrastructure and livelihoods across the country.
