Kenya, 5 August 2026 - President William Ruto has officially launched Kenya's National Ambulance Dispatch Centre, a new technology-driven emergency response system designed to improve coordination between patients, emergency responders and healthcare facilities across the country.
The facility, located at the Social Health Authority (SHA) headquarters in Nairobi, is expected to serve as the nerve centre of Kenya's emergency medical services by coordinating ambulance movements in real time through a centralised digital platform.
Health officials said the system would significantly reduce response times and improve patient outcomes by ensuring that emergency teams are dispatched to incidents as quickly as possible.
Speaking during the launch, health officials demonstrated how the system would operate using satellite technology and GPS tracking devices installed in ambulances operated by county governments, the Kenya Red Cross Society and St John Ambulance Kenya.
The technology allows dispatchers to monitor the exact location of every ambulance, determine which vehicles are available for deployment and identify the nearest health facilities capable of handling specific medical emergencies.
The system can also monitor water ambulances, including the Afya 1 vessel operating in Lamu County.
Health Principal Secretary Dr Mary Muthoni described the initiative as a major milestone in the country's efforts to strengthen emergency medical care.
Dr Joyce Wamiche explained that the technology uses colour-coded indicators to show the status of every vehicle.
Green indicates that an ambulance is available for deployment, while red signifies that the ambulance is already attending to an emergency.
The centre will initially be operated by 40 trained dispatchers responsible for receiving emergency calls and determining the urgency of each situation.
Officials said dispatchers would collect crucial information from callers, including:
- Names and contact details;
- The nature of the incident;
- The exact location of the patient;
- The number of people involved;
- The severity of injuries; and
- The patient's medical cover details.
The system is designed to classify emergencies into categories ranging from single-patient incidents to large-scale disasters involving multiple casualties.

Dispatchers will then identify the most appropriate response strategy before deploying either road or water ambulances.
During the launch, dispatcher Ali Karuga demonstrated the process using a mock emergency call where the president received the call and acquired the necessary information recording details of the emergency into the digital system.
One of the centre's most significant innovations is its direct connection to hospitals across the country.
The platform allows dispatchers to determine which facilities have intensive care unit (ICU) beds, specialised medical staff and other essential resources required to treat patients.
According to Dr Mboke Joseph, the centre's medical lead, ambulance crews can access information immediately after accepting an assignment.
"The system allows the crew to receive the dispatch, access the patient's location and review information about the incident before arriving at the scene," he explained.
The platform also enables paramedics to upload medical records, update dispatchers about the patient's condition and document the care provided while travelling to the hospital.
Medical personnel can then complete the process by recording details of the patient's handover to hospital staff, creating a complete digital record of the entire journey.
The launch forms part of broader reforms aimed at integrating emergency services into the country's healthcare system under the Social Health Authority.
Officials say the initiative will improve accountability while helping the government monitor the performance of emergency medical services across the country.
The development also comes as Kenya moves towards establishing a unified emergency response system capable of handling everything from road accidents and fires to disease outbreaks and natural disasters.
Authorities hope the centre will eventually become the backbone of a nationwide network connecting patients, healthcare workers, ambulances and hospitals through a single digital platform.
