Somalia, 15 May 2026 – Somalia’s disaster management agency SoDMA said on Thursday that Russia plans to deliver food aid to Somalia to assist vulnerable communities.
The announcement came made after a meeting in Mogadishu between Somalia’s Interior Minister, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moalim Abdulle, and Russia’s ambassador to Djibouti, Mikhail Golovanov. Golovanov is visiting Somalia on a working trip.
According to SoDMA, the Russian ambassador’s visit focused on humanitarian assistance and coordination for the planned food aid shipment to the agency.
The meeting also discussed broader cooperation between Somalia and Russia in humanitarian affairs and disaster response.

According to United Nations estimates, millions of Somalis remain in need of humanitarian assistance due to drought, displacement, conflict and climate-related shocks affecting large parts of the country.
Aid agencies say food insecurity remains a major concern following repeated droughts and flooding that have disrupted livelihoods, livestock and agricultural production in recent years.
Russia previously delivered 25,000 tons of grain aid to Somalia in 2023 following severe flooding linked to El Niño.
