Somalia, 28 October 2025 Puntland and the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia) have agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating maritime crimes in the Gulf of Eden.
The agreement was reached on Sunday in Bosaso during meeting between Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) Commander General Abdirabi Abdisamad Mohamed, and Head of Mission EUCAP Somalia Kęstutis Lančinskas. Also present were Puntland Presidency Security Strategy Advisor Mohamed Warsame, and other senior officers.
Confirming the agreement, a statement issued by Puntland Presidency said both parties agreed on the importance of making EUCAP’s support directly responsive to the needs of the PMPF to enhance the effectiveness of maritime operations and the fight against sea-based crimes.
The statement also said the officials explored ways of aligning EUCAP’s technical and logistical assistance with the operational needs of PMP in combating illegal fishing, human trafficking, and other maritime crimes.
In recent weeks, Puntland has accused foreign vessels operating off its coast of engaging in unlicensed fishing and other maritime crimes.
The PMPF has conducted operations against illegal fishing vessels and unlicensed boats, arresting and prosecuting individuals of various nationalities.
The force has reiterated its commitment to protecting marine resources and ensuring maritime security along Puntland’s coastline.
