Mogadishu, May 6, 2026
Opposition groups in Mogadishu have called for large-scale peaceful protests on May 10 in support of displaced citizens and to voice concerns over government actions, opposition figures said on Tuesday.
The planned demonstrations come as the federal government prepares to hold political talks with opposition leaders on the same day to discuss the country’s political situation and ongoing disputes.
Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said the protests are intended to defend the rights of displaced communities and express solidarity with affected families.

“We call on the Somali people to come out peacefully and support those displaced from their homes and shelters,” Sharif said. “This demonstration is peaceful and aims to restore the rights of citizens.”
Opposition leaders said the protests would remain non-violent and stressed that their demands focus on respect for citizens’ rights and increased support for displaced people.
The federal government has previously described the planned talks with the opposition as an important step toward easing political tensions and addressing key national issues.
The demonstrations are expected to take place as political uncertainty continues over elections and broader constitutional disputes in Somalia.
