Somalia, 12 October 2025 — Somalia’s North East State and Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State have agreed to establish security cooperation following a high-level meeting held today in Buuhoodle, according to North East State officials.
The discussions centered on improving regional stability and protecting shared interests along the border. Both sides agreed to strengthen collaboration between their respective security institutions, exchange intelligence, and coordinate responses to cross-border threats.
The agreement also covers joint measures on border protection, combating human trafficking, and curbing organized crime. Regular meetings will be held to ensure continued coordination between the two administrations.
Omar Abdi Akabe, Chairperson of the Ayn region in Somalia’s North East State, said the talks were constructive and focused on practical solutions to security challenges the two regions face.
“We discussed border security, trade movement, and ways to enhance cooperation between our two administrations. Both sides are committed to tackling challenges such as human trafficking and organized crime. The meeting concluded positively, and we will continue this partnership in the interest of regional peace and development,” said Akabe.
North East State officials said Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State expressed support for the new administration and its commitment to peace, while the Federal Member State welcomed continued collaboration in security and trade.
North East State, formerly known as Khatumo State, is a Federal Member State in northern Somalia with its capital in Las Anod.
