Ethiopia, 14 December 2025 - The humanitarian and development organization Mercy Corps has distributed 2,920 goats to residents of Baqaroow District in the Somali Regional State, benefiting 584 households, with each family receiving four female goats and one male goat.
The project; part of early recovery programmes, aims to reduce the impact of droughts experienced in recent years that severely affected livestock and livelihoods in villages across Baqaroow District and the wider Somali Regional State.
According to Mercy Corps, each household received five goats, bringing the total number of livestock distributed to 2,920. The selection focused on vulnerable families who depend on livestock but lost animals due to repeated droughts.
The District Commissioner of Baqaroow, Abdullahi Adan Khalif, said the project would significantly contribute to rebuilding community livelihoods.
“We believe this assistance will make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, especially for the families fortunate enough to receive this support,” the district commissioner said.

The programme also includes livestock care support to ensure the distributed goats are properly managed, reproduce effectively, and increase household productivity—particularly improving nutrition, income, and resilience.
Mercy Corps said the initiative is not limited to Baqaroow District but forms part of a broader programme across the Somali Regional State, focusing on clean water, sanitation, animal health and vaccination, and strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities.
The livestock distribution is expected to boost livestock production and help beneficiary households restore and improve their livelihoods after being affected by prolonged drought conditions.
