Somalia, 26 June 2026 – Hirshabelle President Ali Abdullahi Hussein Gudlawe, said nine districts are prepared for direct elections under Somalia’s one-person, one-vote system.
In an interview with Dawan Media’s Mizan Podcast, Gudlawe said residents in seven of the nine districts had completed voter registration, while registration materials had been delivered to the remaining two districts.
“Up to nine districts are expected to hold elections in Hirshabelle,” Gudlawe said. “Residents in seven of them have registered, and materials have been delivered to the other two. Registration will begin there soon.”

Gudlawe said some districts had previously established local councils, but the process was paused after Somalia moved toward a wider direct election system based on one person, one vote.
He said the plan was part of efforts to expand public participation in politics and strengthen democratic governance at the district level in Hirshabelle.
