Kenya, 16 May 2026 - Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro is seeking an urgent recall of Parliament in a fresh push to ease the burden of soaring fuel prices that have triggered public anger across the country.
In a letter addressed to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Nyoro asked MPs to return from recess for a special sitting to debate proposed legal changes aimed at cutting pump prices by as much as KSh27 per litre.
The move comes just days after EPRA announced sharp increases in petrol and diesel prices, sparking fears of higher transport costs and rising prices of basic goods.
Nyoro wants the House recalled as early as Monday, the same day matatu operators and motorists are expected to stage nationwide protests over the fuel hike.
“I respectfully write to request your consideration for the recall of the National Assembly from recess… to deliberate on urgent proposed legislative amendments aimed at reducing the cost of fuel in the country,” Nyoro wrote.
At the centre of his proposal is a plan to scrap the 8 per cent VAT charged on fuel products and reduce the Road Maintenance Levy by KSh7.
According to the MP, removing VAT on petroleum products would lower the cost of petrol and diesel by KSh15.87 and KSh17.99 respectively.
He also wants Parliament to revoke the 2024 Road Maintenance Levy order, arguing that the current taxes are placing unbearable pressure on households and businesses already struggling with the high cost of living.

“All these proposals can reduce the price by an acceptable margin and avert damaging inflationary effects to the economy,” Nyoro said in a public statement.
The lawmaker further noted that the government’s proposal to inject an additional KSh5 billion subsidy for diesel does not require parliamentary approval and can be implemented immediately.
Parliament is currently on recess and is expected to resume normal sittings on May 26.
However, Nyoro argues the fuel crisis cannot wait that long, warning that continued price increases could trigger wider economic hardship.
The push by the outspoken MP places fresh political pressure on the Kenya Kwanza administration, which is facing growing criticism over the rising cost of fuel and its impact on transport, food prices and business operations.
If approved, the emergency sitting would see MPs debate some of the most significant fuel tax changes proposed in recent months.
