Kenya, May 18, 2026 - National cohesion and integration commission (NCIC) has on Monday slammed Meru leaders over their calls to reject the new county Commissioner.
In a press statement posted on their social media accounts, the commission noted their attention was drawn to remarks by Meru political leaders over routine posting of county Commissioners.
The commission said the county Commissioner and other National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and other civil servants may serve any part of the country.
Section of Meru leaders have said they won’t the new county Commissioner posted in Meru claiming he belongs to the community that have been in conflicts that have resulted to killings of youths in the county.
“The said utterances are circulating widely on social media have caused alarm amongst Kenyans of diverse communities, NCIC condemns these utterances in the strongest terms possible, “ said the statement by the Dr Daniel Mutegi, the CEC and secretary of the commission.
The commission said the remarks by the leaders are divisive, unlawful and have no place in a constitutional democracies.
Dr Mutegi said section 62 of the NCIC act prohibits any person from uttering words that are intended to invite feelings contempt, hatred, hostility or violence against any person or group or community on the bases of ethnicity or race.

He further noted that the act provide that any person who makes such utterances is liable to criminal prosecution adding that the commission is currently investigating the matter.
“Every Kenyan has constitutional rights to live and work anywhere within the republic, that sis subject to approval by any political leader,” said Dr Mutegi.
The commission said it will update the public on the outcome of its investigation in due course.
NCIC has appealed to political leaders to exercise restraint and responsibility in their communication to the public.
They have called on Kenyans to uphold peace, reject ethnic contempt in all its forms and reports incidents of hate speech and ethnic incitement to the commission through its official channels.
