April 28, 2026 - Chaos and panic were reported in Mwingi on Tuesday evening after passenger buses were attacked. The attacks are believed to be retaliatory following the killing of seven people along the border between Tana River and Kitui counties.
Videos shared online show buses being pelted with stones, with passengers heard crying for help. Some travellers said they were stranded at Bisan Hargeysa, fearing being caught in the violence.
Nominated MP Umulkheir Harun, who was among those travelling to Nairobi, cautioned travellers to exercise extreme caution until the situation stabilises.
“We are currently stranded. Please, if you are coming from Nairobi or Garissa, exercise extreme caution,” she said.
The MP urged passengers to wait for clearance from police before continuing their journeys.
Witnesses said one of the buses was travelling between Garissa and Mwingi when it came under attack. Videos from the scene showed the vehicle speeding away as stones smashed its windscreen.
