Kenya, 25 June 2026 - The construction of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Multi-Speciality Hospital Project in Uasin Gishu County is set to be completed in early 2027, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.
During a meeting between Medical Services Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga and his Defence Counterpart Patrick Mariru, they discussed construction progress, project timelines, and other key implementation milestones.
Once the 2,000-bed facility is completed, it will be among the largest hospitals in the country, strengthening the country’s capacity to provide advanced healthcare, support medical training and research, and strengthen the country’s referral health system.
“Oluga reiterated the Government’s commitment to strategic investments that strengthen healthcare infrastructure, expand access to specialised medical services and advance the attainment of Universal Health Coverage,” the Ministry of Health stated.
Also present were the Ministry of Health’s Head of Infrastructure Projects, Dr. Hezron Omolo, and the Ministry of Defence’s Chief of Special Projects, Brigadier Titus Sokobe,” it added.
In September 2025, President William Ruto directed the Ministry of Defence, through the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and construct over 70 Level Four hospitals across the country.
So far, KDF has already been deployed in Siaya, Nairobi, Meru, and Kiambu, among others, to revive stalled hospital projects and oversee the construction of new ones.
The two ministries have assured that they will continue collaborating in delivering national health infrastructure projects that are aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services and building new ones.
