Somalia, 2 Febuary, 2026 Mogadishu Port recorded its highest monthly container handling volume on record in January, processing 21,650 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) serviced by 16 container vessels, the port’s Director General said on Monday.
Mohamed Ali Nur said the performance marked the strongest monthly container result in the port’s history, citing improved operational efficiency and growing confidence among international shipping lines.
“This is the highest monthly performance ever recorded at the port,” he said, adding that the milestone reflected sustained improvements in port operations.

The January achievement follows another record set late last year. In December, Mogadishu Port Authority announced that the port had handled a record 160,703.96 metric tonnes of non-containerised cargo in November, the highest volume ever recorded in the port’s history.
The move to round-the-clock operations follows a government decision in November last year allowing cargo trucks to access the Port of Mogadishu at night, after the Ministry of Ports introduced a 24-hour operational schedule to ease congestion and improve logistics flow.
Nur praised port staff and operator Alport Mogadishu for their dedication and professionalism, saying continued efficiency gains had strengthened Somalia’s position as a regional maritime and trade hub.
