Somalia,7 April 2026 Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed ‘Mungab’ suspended demolitions on public land Thursday following complaints from residents, the regional administration said.
In a statement, Mungab said the decision was made under directives from the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and in “consideration of public concerns related to land redevelopment efforts in the capital.”
The Mayor ordered the regional police command to immediately enforce the suspension.
The statement also announced the appointment of a committee comprising land experts, lawyers, religious scholars, and civil society members to investigate complaints and verify documents held by affected residents.

The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the mayor to support an administrative decision aimed at resolving the disputes.
Meanwhile, the Mogadishu municipality said it is working with Somalia’s Public Works Ministry on a plan to allocate land and construct homes for displaced people and others affected by what authorities called public land redevelopment projects in Mogadishu.
The Banadir administration said the local government remains committed to addressing public grievances while prioritizing the reconstruction and development of the Somali capital.
The decision comes as opposition groups have announced protests against the government over the demolitions, which authorities describe as urban redevelopment and road opening operations in neighborhoods built on public property.
