Kenya, 19 May 2026 - The Kenya Revenue Authority Board has appointed the former Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed as the Commissioner General of the authority.
In a statement, the Board Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi said that Mohamed was appointed after a rigorous recruitment process, which is part of broader efforts to restructure the authority’s leadership.
Adan will replace Lilian Nyawanda, who was holding the position in an acting capacity, and will transition back to her original role as the Commissioner for Customs and Border Control.
"We sincerely thank Dr. Lilian Nyawanda for stepping up to lead the Authority in the acting capacity. Her dedication, professionalism, and leadership during this transition have been invaluable, and we look forward to her continued contribution at the helm of Customs and Border Control," Muriithi said.

Muriithi is confident that Mohamed, who has over three decades of leadership experience in various sectors, including finance, management consulting, public service, and corporate governance, will be a valuable addition to the authority.
Mohamed previously served as the Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation, Trade and Cooperatives between 2013 and 2018, where he spearheaded key reforms, including the development of the Kenya Industrial Transformation Programme (KITP) and Kenya Pioneer Trade Policy.
He then served as the Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community and Regional Development, and also briefly served as the Acting Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries.
Prior to public service, he hl also served in key positions in Barclays Bank Africa, and Barclays Bank Kenya.
“The Board has pledged its full support to the incoming Commissioner General and called on staff, taxpayers, and stakeholders to accord him the cooperation needed to deliver on KRA's mandate of mobilising revenue for national development,” Muriithi stated.
This comes less than two months after the Board declined to renew the contract of former KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga, who was then appointed as High Commissioner to South Africa by President William Ruto.
