MOGADISHU 2 May 2026 —Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheyre warned on Saturday that Somalia could face a legal and political crisis if no agreement is reached on elections before May 15.
Kheyre said the date marks the end of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s current term, cautioning that failure to secure a consensus-based political settlement could create uncertainty over leadership legitimacy.
He said such a scenario could leave the country without a clearly recognised president or functioning parliament, increasing the risk of instability.

Kheyre also warned that existing tensions within federal member states and broader governance structures could deepen if the situation remains unresolved.
He added that prolonged uncertainty could undermine national unity and strain relations across different parts of the country.
The former prime minister called on Somali youth to play an active role in safeguarding the country’s future, urging collective efforts to preserve stability and unity.
The remarks come amid ongoing disagreements over Somalia’s electoral process and constitutional framework, with political stakeholders yet to reach a unified approach.
