Kenya, 19 August 2026 - Kenya Power has introduced performance management contracts for more than 6,000 union employees in an effort to strengthen accountability, improve productivity and enhance service delivery to customers.
The company said on Wednesday that the move followed more than two decades of negotiations between its management and union employees who are represented by the Kenya Electrical Trades and Allied Workers Union (KETAWU), a process that was guided by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC)
The move also makes Kenya Power one of the first government-owned enterprises to adopt performance contracts for union staff, in line with the Government-Owned Enterprises Act, 2025.
The move comes even as the utility company’s customer base has grown significantly over the years, from a low of 370,000 customers in 1996 to the current 10.4 million, which has come with an expectation of excellence in service delivery.
The utility company’s CEO Joseph Siror said that the contracts will be central to ensuring that individual employees meet their commitments, uphold standards and deliver results.
Through performance contracting, the Company will monitor the productivity of all its staff under one framework.
“Productivity is not simply about doing more. It is about delivering better results through effective use of our time, our skills, our resources and our technology. We are becoming more efficient, more reliable and more focused on our customers,” Siror said.
“But improvement is not the destination, excellence is, and it will not come from systems alone. It will come from each one of us: the work we do, the targets we commit to, the standards we uphold and the results we deliver,” he added.
Ruth Muiruri, Kenya Power’s Director, who spoke on behalf of the Chairman of the Board of Directors, said that the contracts will enable the company to attain corporate goals through measurable gains in service delivery.
“The Board of Directors will continue to provide guidance to the management and the leadership of KETAWU to ensure smooth implementation of the productivity management framework,” Muiruri said.
