Kenya, 25 October 2026 – Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday promised that opposition leaders would prioritise the dualling of the Mombasa-Nairobi road if they win the 2027 presidential race and form the government.
Kalonzo, who served as Vice President before the 2010 Constitution was promulgated, said the highway had turned into a death trap. He said priority should have been placed on dualling the road even before the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
He was speaking during the 40th Anniversary Memorial and Thanksgiving Service of Mzee Ephantus Muchiri at Ithare-Ini in Kirinyaga County, where he urged all attendees to observe a moment of silence for the 22 travellers who died on Sunday morning.
“That road from Mombasa to Nairobi should have been made a dual carriage road, even according to me, ahead of even SGR, and we have given our commitment. That is, the incoming government, we believe, will keep it a priority so that at least we can save the lives of Kenyans,” Kalonzo said.
The Nairobi-Mombasa highway (A109) is largely a single carriageway, with traffic in both directions sharing the same road. Only some stretches are dual.
Kalonzo said it had become a killer road, adding that just recently 17 lives were lost along it as the victims travelled from Mikindani near Changamwe in Mombasa to attend a religious function in Subukia.
Sunday’s accident happened near Kanga area, past Mtito Andei, when a bus collided head-on with a lorry. Preliminary reports said the bus, ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony in western Kenya, was heading towards Mombasa when the accident occurred.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif had earlier confirmed 20 fatalities before the death toll rose to 22 after two passengers succumbed to their injuries.

“Investigations are under way to establish what really happened,” Khalif said.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment. The bodies of those who died in the crash were taken to the hospital’s mortuary.
On the Eastleigh building collapse, Kalonzo said the Nairobi Governor must be held accountable and avoid shifting blame.
“Leaders must take responsibility,” he said.
He said carelessness has no place in Kenya and leaders must stick to the legal lane and not abuse power.
Kalonzo said he believes God is working to ensure that he makes President William Ruto a one-term president.
