Kenya, April 20,2026 - A political exchange between Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) escalated on Monday, with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed dismissing claims that ODM has lost its independence.
Speaking at the ODM Youth Convention in Nairobi, Junet pushed back against remarks by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, who had alleged that ODM had been absorbed into the ruling UDA party.
Junet rejected the claims outright, insisting ODM remains a strong national outfit with deep roots across the country.
“This is a national party, not a village party like some of these which have been recently founded,” he said.
He criticised Gachagua for repeatedly mentioning ODM leaders, arguing that his party lacks the political weight to challenge ODM.
“Someone like Gachagua lectures ODM every day… yet his party cannot even compete with the ODM Migori branch,” Junet added.
The lawmaker maintained that ODM’s support for the broad-based government does not mean it has surrendered its identity, describing the arrangement as a shared governance approach rather than a merger.

At the same time, Junet took issue with what he termed as unnecessary attacks on ODM leadership, warning that the party would not tolerate internal or external disrespect.
“We cannot demand respect from someone like Rigathi. This is a national party,” he said.
He also hinted at a political showdown in the next general election, saying ODM would prove its strength at the ballot.
The remarks come amid growing political tensions and shifting alliances, with leaders increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
