UK, 29 July 2026 - Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign experienced England midfielder Jordan Henderson, with the former Liverpool captain set to join the Blues on a two-year contract until June 2028.
The deal comes after Henderson and Brentford mutually agreed to terminate his contract, paving the way for the 36-year-old to complete a free transfer to Stamford Bridge. The midfielder is expected to undergo a medical and finalize the move later this week.
The transfer represents another major statement by Chelsea during the summer window as the club continues to reshape its squad under head coach Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea Continue Shift Towards Experience
For several transfer windows, Chelsea built one of the youngest squads in European football, focusing almost exclusively on emerging talent.
This summer, however, the club has adjusted its recruitment strategy.
After the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, Henderson's arrival highlights Chelsea's desire to add proven Premier League experience and leadership to a squad filled with young players. Henderson joined Brentford in the summer of 2025 after leaving Ajax and quickly became one of the club's senior figures.
Although he still had a year remaining on his contract, Brentford agreed to terminate the deal by mutual consent, allowing him to leave on a free transfer. Reports indicate there had been an understanding between Henderson and the club that he would be allowed to depart if an opportunity matching his ambitions arose.
Following his departure, Henderson thanked Brentford's players, staff and supporters for their support during his time at the club.
Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Henderson on a contract running until June 2028.
With the player now a free agent following his exit from Brentford, the transfer is expected to be completed quickly once he passes his medical examination.
