July 01, 2026 - Isiolo County Government and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening climate resilience, food security and sustainable livelihoods following a two-day review of the Building Back Better and Greener Programme.
The dissemination workshop, which brought together county officials, development partners and community representatives, assessed the programme's achievements and explored strategies for scaling up climate-smart interventions across the county.
Deputy County Secretary Mohamed Boru, who officially opened the forum, said the programme has made significant strides in improving livelihoods, enhancing food and nutrition security, strengthening social protection and building resilience against the impacts of climate change.
Participants reviewed findings from the programme's 2024 independent impact evaluation, shared experiences from beneficiaries and discussed practical measures to enhance sustainability and expand the reach of successful interventions.
Speaking during the meeting, county officials and FAO representatives underscored the importance of stronger collaboration between government, development partners and local communities in delivering long-term solutions for vulnerable households.
Chief Officer for Civic Education and Public Participation Judy Karendi said informed decision-making, community participation and effective partnerships remain critical to improving resilience and expanding opportunities for residents.

The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment by the county government and FAO to deepen cooperation in promoting climate-smart agriculture, enhancing social protection programmes and implementing sustainable interventions aimed at improving the livelihoods of communities affected by climate change and recurring drought.
The event was attended by Kinna MCA Rtd. Major Jillo, Bulla Pesa MCA Waithaka, county directors, gender officers, programme beneficiaries and community representatives.
Isiolo is among Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties, where communities frequently face prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall and the effects of climate change that threaten livelihoods largely dependent on pastoralism and rain-fed agriculture.
The Building Back Better and Greener Programme forms part of broader efforts by FAO and the county government to strengthen resilience through climate-smart agriculture, improved natural resource management, social protection and livelihood diversification. The initiative seeks to help vulnerable households better withstand climate shocks while promoting sustainable food systems and long-term economic recovery.
