Djibouti, 17 May 2026 – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development called for continued political dialogue in Somalia after consultations in Mogadishu between the federal government and the opposition.
In a statement on Saturday, the IGAD Secretariat said it had taken note of the outcome of consultations held from May 13 to May 15 in Mogadishu between Somali government officials and opposition figures.
The regional bloc welcomed what it described as direct engagement between the parties and encouraged continued dialogue to address outstanding political issues “in a constructive and inclusive manner.”
IGAD said sustained political engagement remained essential for safeguarding Somalia’s stability, strengthening democratic governance and advancing state-building efforts.

The bloc also reiterated support for Somali-led efforts aimed at advancing inclusive governance, preserving peace and security and ensuring long-term stability in Somalia and the wider region.
The statement comes after political talks between the Somali federal government and the opposition ended without a final agreement, amid continuing disagreements over constitutional reforms and the country’s electoral process.
