Kenya, 25 June 2026 - Police mounted extensive security operations across major routes leading into Nairobi on Thursday, setting up roadblocks and restricting movement ahead of planned demonstrations marking the anniversary of the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests.
A standoff was reported along the Thika Superhighway after anti-riot police blocked pedestrians and vehicles heading towards the capital. Motorists were turned back at several checkpoints, causing disruptions to transport and commuter movement.
Security officers established roadblocks in Thika, Ruiru, Juja, Kahawa and Githurai, with authorities intensifying security measures amid expectations of large crowds gathering for the commemorative protests.
Reports from various parts of Nairobi indicated that access to the Central Business District (CBD) had been significantly restricted, with major streets remaining largely deserted during the morning hours. Police maintained a visible presence at key entry points to the city as they monitored movements and enforced the restrictions.
Additional roadblocks were set up along major highways and roads including Thika Road, Waiyaki Way and the Ongata Rongai route, affecting both private and public transport operators.

The planned demonstrations are intended to commemorate the June 25, 2024 Gen Z protests, which opposition leaders anticipate participation from young Kenyans and sparked nationwide discussions on governance, accountability and economic challenges.
By mid-morning, many commuters were stranded or forced to seek alternative routes as police continued to regulate movement into the city centre. Businesses within parts of the CBD remained closed, while public transport services operated at reduced capacity on some routes.
Authorities had not immediately issued a comprehensive statement on the road closures, but security agencies maintained that the measures were aimed at preserving public order and ensuring safety during the demonstrations.
The situation remained fluid, with police maintaining a heavy presence across Nairobi and its surrounding areas as the planned protests got underway.
