MOGADISHU (Dawan) – August 9, 2026 – Somalia’s National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons has warned that cuts in humanitarian funding are already impacting essential services for vulnerable communities and could further affect refugees and internally displaced people.
The commission's Chairman, Liban Abdi Egal expressed the concern when he met Jeremy Konyndyk, President of Refugees International, and Abdullahi Boru Halakhe, the organisation’s Senior Advocate for East and Southern Africa in Mogadishu on Saturday.
The Refugees International representatives are in Mogadishu to assess the impact of reductions in humanitarian funding and assistance provided to communities affected by conflict, displacement and difficult living conditions.

Egal briefed the delegation on the current situation facing refugees and displaced communities, highlighting the effects of reduced funding on services and support available to vulnerable groups.
The meeting also discussed priority humanitarian needs, ways to sustain assistance and efforts to find durable solutions to displacement challenges.
The officials concluded the meeting with a commitment to strengthen cooperation. The National Commission for Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons said it would continue to mobilise support and funding for displaced communities.
