Somaliland, October 13, 2025 — Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding, disrupting road transport between Hargeisa and Berbera, according to officials in Somaliland.
Authorities in the Sahil region reported that the floods resulted from several days of intense rainfall in the Lafarug area, cutting off one of the most vital road links connecting Berbera to eastern regions of Somaliland.
Several vehicles were stranded along the route, which serves as a major artery for trade and transport to and from Berbera Port — a key economic hub for the region.
Local officials, port authorities, and police have launched emergency operations to manage the situation and assist those affected by the blockage.
Sahil Regional Governor Mohamed Dahir Gafane said a rapid plan is in place to reopen the road and urged drivers to exercise patience and caution.
“We are working as quickly as possible to reopen the road. I urge drivers to be patient and to not obstruct the ongoing rescue operations,” Gafane told reporters on Sunday.
Berbera Deputy Mayor Nur Abdi Jama also urged residents to avoid crossing flooded areas until the waters recede.
Authorities further advised livestock herders and traders to use alternative safe routes and cooperate with emergency teams until the situation stabilizes.
The Lafarug crossing is a crucial corridor linking Berbera with the eastern regions, particularly Togdheer, and plays a vital role in Somaliland’s trade and logistics network connected to Berbera Port.
