MOGADISHU, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somalia is reclaiming its democratic legacy and entering a new phase of national development built on stronger institutions, resilient citizens and greater self-reliance.
Addressing guests during a reception marking the 250th anniversary of American independence at the United States Embassy in Mogadishu, the President said recent developments had demonstrated the confidence and resilience of the Somali people.
“As we have witnessed over the past week, the Somali people have once again shown their resilience and confidence in their country,” he said. He added that Somalia was one of Africa’s first democracies after independence in 1960 and is gradually reclaiming that legacy.

The President said Somalia is entering a new chapter in which it increasingly relies on the strength of its own institutions, its people and its resources to build a peaceful, stable and prosperous country.
Mohamud also highlighted the role of the Somali American community in strengthening ties between the two countries, saying its members contribute through business, education, public service and innovation.
He said many Somali Americans also actively contribute to Somalia’s fight against terrorism, state-building efforts and national modernisation, reinforcing the enduring friendship between the Somali and American peoples.
