United States, April 28, 2026 - Google has expanded its Digital ID features to users in India, Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, allowing them to securely store and use digital credentials for both physical and online verification.
Google’s digital IDs are secure, digital versions of driver’s licenses or state IDs stored in the Google Wallet app, which allow users to verify identity at select airport checkpoints, with law enforcement, or for mobile services.
While the U.S. is the primary market for some of Google Wallet’s features, over 150 nations globally are implementing, planning, or piloting some form of national digital ID.
In a statement, the company says that its expansion is being prompted by the increasing need for digital IDs across the globe, which have become a convenient way for people to prove who they are without carrying physical documents.
The company has said that it is partnering with other companies to ensure that the IDs are secure and private across both physical and digital spaces as they are rolled out.
In India, for example, the company has partnered with the Unique Identification Authority of India, which will enable customers to save their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly in Google Wallet on their devices.
Other companies in India, including PVR INOX, BharatMatrimony, Mygate, Snabbit, and Atyls, have also partnered with the company to integrate digital IDs into their services.
More from Kenya
“We are focused on building digital IDs based on global standards with advanced privacy features like selective disclosure, where only the relevant details of a person’s ID are shared when required, ensuring everyone has a safe way to manage their identity,” Google said.
“Security, privacy, and interoperability are at the foundation of our approach to digital identity, and are built into every layer of this integration,” it added.
On the other hand, users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil can now create an ID pass based on their passport information and save it in Google Wallet.
The company said that the feature offers a secure and private way to verify identity or age for both in-person and online services, including when signing into accounts and accessing age-restricted services.
In Kenya, the company is actively strengthening its partnership with the government to bolster digital infrastructure to accommodate digital identification.
