Kenya, 17 July 2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hailed the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP)'s victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election as a major milestone for the young party, saying the result reflects the confidence voters have placed in its leadership.
In a statement after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru the winner, Gachagua congratulated the MP-elect for securing a commanding victory over his rivals.
"Congratulations, Hon. Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, on your historic election as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency. You have won by a resounding margin, reflecting the unmistakable voice of the people," Gachagua said.
He thanked Ol Kalou residents for electing DCP's first Member of the National Assembly, describing the outcome as a significant moment for the party.
"Thank you, my great people, for giving our party, DCP, its first Member of the National Assembly."
Gachagua also praised voters for what he described as their determination to protect the electoral process despite challenges witnessed during the campaign.
"Thank you a million times for guarding your vote and for standing firm despite the actions of rogue police officers armed with guns and tear gas."
The former Deputy President said the victory would strengthen his political movement as it continues to position itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

"I have been struggling with 18 soldiers but with great results; now I have 19. Things will be much better."
He commended Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Woman Representative Wanjiku Muhia, campaign teams, elected leaders and volunteers for their role in securing the win.
Gachagua also announced that he would tour all five wards in Ol Kalou on Friday to personally thank residents for their support.
Addressing the MP-elect, he urged Kamau to honour the trust placed in him by the electorate.
"Hon. Kamau, please go and serve your people diligently, and represent them well."
Kamau won the by-election with 35,440 votes, defeating UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who garnered 5,450 votes. The victory gives DCP its first parliamentary seat since its formation and is expected to boost the party's influence in the Mt Kenya region as political parties begin shaping alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
