MOGADISHU (Bawaba ) 20 June 2026 – Former Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Aden Mohamed Nur (Madobe), formally left his position on Saturday, ten days after being elected president of South West State, and handed over his duties to First Deputy Speaker Sacdiya Yasin Haji Samatar.
The handover took place during an extraordinary meeting of the House leadership at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu, according to a statement issued by the chamber.
The move followed Madobe’s assumption of office as president of South West State, leaving the position of Speaker of the House of the People vacant.
Article 81 of Somalia’s 2026 Federal Constitution stipulates that a member of parliament loses their seat upon accepting another government position at any level of government.

In accordance with the constitution and the House’s rules of procedure, First Deputy Speaker Sacdiya Yasin will serve as acting Speaker until a new Speaker is elected.
Second Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Omar Abshirow praised Madobe’s role in advancing legislative work, strengthening cooperation within parliament and maintaining parliamentary procedures during his tenure.
Madobe also handed over the House’s general report, administrative procedures and strategic plan to the acting Speaker. The House of the People has not yet announced a date for the election of a new Speaker.
