Kenya, November 02,2026 - Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari Ndung’u have been sentenced in a major corruption case linked to a road tender worth Ksh588.7 million.
Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa delivered the ruling on Monday, 2 November, at the Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi. The court found Waititu and his wife guilty on money-laundering charges connected to the irregular award of a roads contract by the Kiambu County government during his time in office.
On one count, the court fined Waititu Ksh10 million or ordered him to serve five years in prison if he fails to pay. On a second count, he was fined Ksh6 million or four years in prison. On a third count, he received a fine of Ksh5 million or four years behind bars. The court also sentenced his wife and other people linked to the case.
This is not the first punishment in the matter. Waititu was earlier convicted in February 2025 on related corruption charges and handed a 12-year prison term. That conviction was later upheld by the High Court. The new sentences come after the High Court overturned earlier acquittals on the money-laundering counts and sent the matter back for sentencing.
The case centres on a road construction tender awarded during the 2017/2018 financial year. Prosecutors said the contract was given in a way that broke procurement rules and that money from the deal was handled in a manner that amounted to money laundering. Waititu had apologised in court and asked for a lighter sentence, saying he and his wife were first-time offenders.

For residents of Kiambu, the long-running case has been a reminder of how public money meant for roads and services can be misused. The court has now closed another chapter by handing down these additional penalties.
The sentences add to the earlier jail term Waititu is already serving. What happens next will depend on whether the convicts pay the fines or serve the prison terms, and whether any further appeals are filed.
