Djibouti, June 24, 2026 – Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh received Mauritania’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Merzoug in Djibouti on Wednesday, the presidency said.
Merzoug visited Djibouti as an envoy of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani and delivered a written message to Guelleh.
The message included greetings from the Mauritanian president, condolences to Guelleh following the recent death of a close family member, and wishes for success as Djibouti marks the 49th anniversary of its independence.
The meeting also discussed developments in the two countries’ and other issues of mutual interest, the presidency said.
“Djibouti and Mauritania share many areas of interest, including the African, Arab and Islamic spheres,” Merzoug told reporters after the meeting.

He said the talks highlighted shared views on the role of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation as a framework for cooperation and diplomatic coordination between the two countries.
Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Houssein Omar who attended the meeting said Djibouti was committed to strengthening cooperation with Mauritania.
Merzoug was accompanied by Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, Mauritania’s former foreign minister and current candidate for the position of secretary-general of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Other Djiboutian officials who were present included presidential diplomatic adviser Fathia Djama Oudine and Mohamed Doualeh Walieh, director of the Arab Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
