Dhibouti, 18 August 2026 — The Government of Djibouti has extended the validity period of the ordinary biometric passport to 10 years, up from five, after Council of Ministers approved a Ministry of Interior proposal on Monday.
The change is intended to reduce the frequency of passport renewals by citizens, simplify administrative procedures and lower renewal costs of travel documents.
Djibouti introduced its biometric passport in February 2017 as a more secure travel document to facilitate the international movement of its citizens.

The previous five-year validity period required passport holders to undergo the renewal process more frequently, resulting in recurring administrative procedures and expenses.
The Ministry of Interior said extending the passport’s validity to 10 years is part of broader efforts to simplify government services and reduce the administrative and financial burden on citizens.
