Gabiley, 19 Aug, 2026 – Construction of 100 homes for low-income families began on Monday in Gabiley, in a UAE-funded project implemented by the Gabiley Local Government and Al-Sunna Charity Organization.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Somaliland’s Minister of Planning Mohumed Ahmed Abdiaziz; Minister of Local Government Haasan Ma’allin; Gabiley Regional Governor Mohamuud Hassan Saleban Dhagah; Gabiley Mayor Mohamed Abdi Hassan; local council members; and Al-Sunna officials.
Beyond the homes, the project includes essential services for residents of the new settlement: a 12-classroom school, a maternal and child health centre, a mosque, a market, and a borehole for water.

Officials described the project as historic, saying it is the first initiative of its kind in Gabiley Region and is expected to address housing and basic service needs for low-income families.
The project site covers about 10 hectares. Officials said securing the land removed a major obstacle to implementation.
Al-Sunna and local officials said the project is part of broader efforts to support low-income families and expand access to social services for people who cannot afford adequate housing and other basic needs.
