UK , August 19 ,2026 - Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, submitting an official offer worth more than €70 million plus €6 million in potential add-ons, according to the latest reporting from David Ornstein.
The proposal represents a major escalation in United's long-running interest in the Cameroon international. However, despite the size of the offer, there is not yet an agreement between Manchester United and Brighton**. Negotiations are continuing, with United expected to return with an improved proposal as they attempt to reach a deal.
The Athletic's David Ornstein reports that United's current offer is approximately €70.1 million (£60m) guaranteed plus €5.8m (£5m) in add-ons. Brighton consider the proposal below their valuation of Baleba, but discussions between the clubs remain amicable.
That distinction is important: Baleba is not yet a Manchester United player, despite reports describing the transfer as close.
The Red Devils are determined to strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes, having already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer. Baleba is viewed as another major piece of the midfield rebuild under head coach Michael Carrick.
Manchester United's interest in Baleba is not new.
The club explored a move for him during the previous summer window but ultimately walked away when Brighton's valuation was understood to be around £100 million or more. Brighton were under no pressure to sell the young midfielder, and United decided against meeting that price.
Baleba subsequently remained at Brighton and continued developing into one of the Premier League's most promising young midfielders.
United's renewed approach therefore represents a significant change in the financial landscape. The current offer is considerably below the enormous valuation Brighton were reportedly demanding last summer, although the Seagulls still believe the latest proposal does not adequately reflect Baleba's value.
Why United want Baleba#
The 22-year-old is regarded as a powerful and versatile midfielder capable of playing both as a defensive midfielder and a more advanced central midfielder.
His physical strength, ball-carrying ability and defensive work make him particularly attractive to United as they seek greater control in the middle of the pitch.
More from Kenya
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 and has since established himself in the Premier League. He has also become an important member of the Cameroon national team.
His age is another major attraction. United would be investing in a player who already possesses substantial Premier League experience but still has considerable room for improvement.
Despite United's latest financial effort, Brighton remain in control of the situation.
The Seagulls have historically been reluctant to sell important players cheaply, and Baleba's contract gives them considerable negotiating leverage.
United are therefore expected to continue discussions rather than assuming the initial bid will be accepted.
There is also growing pressure on the club to complete the deal quickly. With the new Premier League season approaching, Carrick wants his midfield options settled as soon as possible.
Baleba's desire to join Manchester United has been a recurring part of the story. Reports have previously indicated that he was keen on the move, with his interest dating back to United's pursuit last year.
However, his preference alone cannot complete the transfer. Brighton must first agree a fee with United.
For now, the situation is therefore clear:
Manchester United have made a substantial official offer, Brighton have not accepted it, and negotiations are continuing.
If United can improve the proposal enough to satisfy Brighton, Baleba could finally make the move to Old Trafford that has been discussed for more than a year.
