Kenya, December 16 2025 -The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released fresh details shedding light on the final moments of former Cabinet minister and long-serving politician Cyrus Jirongo, as detectives piece together what happened on the night he lost his life along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
Jirongo died following a 2:19 a.m. collision on 13 December at the Karai area in Naivasha. His death has sparked widespread grief, and the DCI has moved swiftly to provide clarity, assuring the public of a thorough and impartial investigation.
According to the updated statement issued on Tuesday, a team of homicide detectives and forensic experts has reconstructed much of the night’s events. Their preliminary findings show that the crash involved Jirongo’s vehicle, KCZ 305U, and a Climax Company Ltd public service bus, KCU 576A. The head-on impact pushed Jirongo’s vehicle several metres from the collision point, with the bus coming to rest farther ahead.
One of the most significant breakthroughs came from CCTV footage retrieved from Eagol Petrol Station, situated near the scene. The footage captures Jirongo entering the station from the Nairobi side at 2:18:40 a.m. Though he did not refuel, he briefly stopped at the exit before turning back towards Nairobi. Just seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the bus is seen ramming into his vehicle.

Detectives have already questioned the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who previously recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He has been released on cash bail and is required to report back to police on 22 December as investigations continue into possible charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
The DCI has also taken statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, and further interviews will be conducted with passengers who were on board the bus. Investigators are additionally reviewing Jirongo’s movements earlier that evening, including interactions during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
Forensic officers are expected to revisit the site for deeper analysis. Once the inquiry is complete, a full file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review. The DCI extended condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and colleagues, promising a credible and transparent investigation in line with the rule of law.
