UK, July 29 ,2026 - Chelsea are set to complete one of the most unexpected transfers of the summer after reaching an agreement to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The former England international is expected to sign a two-year contract until June 2028, with a medical scheduled to take place shortly. The agreement has been reached between Chelsea, Brighton and the player, meaning only the final formalities remain before the transfer is officially announced.
The move represents a significant shift in Chelsea's transfer strategy under new head coach Xabi Alonso, with the club opting to add proven Premier League experience to one of the youngest squads in England.
Few expected Welbeck to become one of Chelsea's targets this summer.
The 35-year-old has spent the last six seasons at Brighton, where he became one of the club's most reliable performers and eventually their all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.
