MOGADISHU, 27 October 2026 Somalia's government said on Tuesday that the Somali National Army (SNA) had killed nearly 75 Al-Shabaab fighters and wounded 56 others in clashes on October 26 in Buurhakaba district’s Jameeca area, southern Bay region.
In a joint statement, the Ministry of Defence and the SNA Command said government forces launched an assault lasting several hours on Al-Shabaab positions in the area as part of the ongoing Banooda military operation.
The ministry said fighting took place at several locations, with government troops inflicting heavy casualties on Al-Shabaab fighters.
During the clashes, Al-Shabaab militants attacked SNA vehicles using vehicles packed with explosives, damaging some military vehicles, according to the Defence Ministry.
The statement did not disclose whether government soldiers were killed or wounded during the fighting, nor did it provide details of the damage sustained by military vehicles.
The Ministry of Defence and the SNA Command said the Banooda operation would continue, with troops targeting Al-Shabaab positions and locations used by the group to organise its fighters.
Dawan could not independently verify the government's reported Al-Shabaab casualty figures, and no independent information was available to confirm the outcome of the fighting.
