The Banaadir regional administration said on Saturday it had approved the opposition protest planned for May 10, but designated Eng Yariisow Stadium as the official venue in what authorities described as an effort to maintain security and stability in Mogadishu.
Banaadir Governor and Mogadishu Mayor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab told a press conference that the administration supports freedom of assembly, movement and expression, which he said are guaranteed under Somalia’s constitution.
“We approve and accept the planned protest if it is peaceful,” Muungaab said.
He said the Banaadir administration, the Ministry of Security and security agencies had agreed the demonstration should be held at Eng Yariisow Stadium to reduce risks to public security and business activity in the capital.

According to the administration, the protest is scheduled to take place between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with participants allowed to travel peacefully to the designated venue.
However, opposition politicians had earlier announced that demonstrations would begin at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, with supporters expected to gather across different districts of Mogadishu.
“We will not accept anyone disrupting security or harming the property and businesses of Somali citizens,” Muungaab said.
The administration also banned any disruption to public transport, commercial activity and essential public services in the capital.
The planned protest comes amid growing political tensions linked to disputes over elections, security and Somalia’s political direction, as both the government and opposition continue separate political mobilization efforts.
