UK, July 10, 2026 - Arsenal have taken a significant step in their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães, with widespread reports indicating that the club has reached an agreement on personal terms with the Brazilian midfielder.
According to L'Équipe, the 28-year-old has agreed to a five-year contract running until June 2031, paving the way for a potential move to the Emirates Stadium this summer. Transfer journalist Nicolo Schira has also reported that the personal terms between Arsenal and the player are in place.
However, while the agreement with the player represents major progress, the deal is far from complete. Arsenal must still reach an agreement with Newcastle United, who remain reluctant to part ways with one of their most influential players.
Reports suggest Arsenal's opening bid of around €70 million was rejected, with Newcastle believed to value Guimarães closer to €90 million. The North East club have reportedly already been informed of the midfielder's desire to join the Premier League champions, but negotiations over the transfer fee are expected to continue.
Guimarães has been a cornerstone of Newcastle's midfield since arriving from Olympique Lyon in January 2022. He has made nearly 200 appearances for the Magpies, becoming club captain and playing a vital role in their domestic and European campaigns.

For Arsenal, signing Guimarães would represent another statement of intent as Mikel Arteta continues strengthening his squad. Renowned for his composure in possession, defensive work rate, progressive passing and leadership, the Brazilian is viewed as one of the Premier League's elite central midfielders.
Should the transfer be completed, former club Lyon would also benefit financially due to a sell-on clause negotiated when Guimarães left the French side for Newcastle in 2022.
Despite the breakthrough on personal terms, negotiations between Arsenal and Newcastle are expected to be decisive over the coming days. Until the two clubs agree on a transfer fee, Guimarães remains a Newcastle United player.
As things stand, Arsenal have secured the player's commitment, but the final hurdle remains convincing Newcastle to approve the sale of their captain.
