Kenya, June 24, 2026 - A passenger bus belonging to Ambasa Coach was involved in a serious road accident along the Garissa-Nairobi highway in Mwingi, Kitui County, in the early hours of Wednesday after colliding with another vehicle and subsequently bursting into flames.
The bus, which had departed from Wajir on Tuesday night, caught fire following the collision and was completely engulfed, prompting fears of multiple casualties and injuries.
Authorities had not yet confirmed the number of victims by the time of publication, as rescue teams and emergency responders continued assessment and recovery efforts at the scene.
Medical personnel at Mwingi Level 4 Referral Hospital were mobilized to receive and treat casualties from the crash.
Dr. Mohamednur Maalim Ali, a medical officer at the hospital, said he responded to a mass casualty alert at around 4 a.m. following the accident.
According to the doctor, the injured passengers brought to the facility sustained less severe injuries than initially feared and were attended to by the medical team on duty.
"Alhamdulillah, the patients received had less severe injuries than expected and were managed with the team on duty," he said.

However, Dr. Mohamednur noted that the emergency response was hampered by shortages of critical supplies, including pain-relief medication and intravenous (IV) giving sets, making initial treatment more challenging.
He said the incident underscores the need for improved emergency preparedness at health facilities located along major highways, including adequate stocks of essential medicines, medical consumables, and access to blood products.
The doctor commended the hospital staff for their swift response and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Police and other emergency agencies are expected to provide further details on the cause of the accident and the number of people affected once investigations and rescue operations are completed.
