According to the preliminary account given by Somaliland authorities, the grenade accidentally fell from one of the injured soldiers before exploding. Police said there was no indication that the device had been deliberately thrown at the group.
An investigation is under way to establish how the grenade came into the soldiers’ possession and the circumstances that led to the explosion.
The incident was followed by reports on social media claiming that a major explosion had taken place in Hargeisa. Somaliland police dismissed those reports as misleading and urged the public not to circulate unverified information.
However, there has been no independent confirmation from sources outside the Somaliland security authorities of the number of people injured or the circumstances surrounding the blast.
