Kenya, 30 April 2026 - Kenya Seed Company (KSC) Board Chairperson Wangui Ngirici, who is eyeing the Kirinyaga governor's seat, has said her supporters will influence the choice of a suitable political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election and maneuver.
The former Kirinyaga Woman Representative declared she will vie for the county’s top seat on an Opposition ticket, signaling a break from her previous association with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp.
Speaking at Kanjai in Ndia Constituency, Ngirici said her next political move will be guided by the will of Kirinyaga voters.
“This time round I have decided to listen to the people of Kirinyaga. I will be where they want me to be,” she said.
Her declaration was punctuated by chants of “One Term” from supporters, a slogan increasingly adopted by Opposition figures to signal a push to unseat the current administration after a single term.
Ngirici embraced the message, leading a call of “Harambee!” to which the crowd responded “One Term,” before affirming: “Ata mimi nimesema hiyo ‘One Term’.”
She said she will soon unveil the specific Opposition party she will use to mount her 2027 gubernatorial bid.
“I will come here again and announce to you the party I will be vying on, but that party will be one among the Opposition outfit,” she said.
Her shift comes amid a broader wave of political repositioning across the country, with leaders recalibrating alliances and testing new political formations as the race to 2027 begins to take shape.
Ngirici insisted that Kirinyaga will not be swayed by external political interests, maintaining that voters will ultimately determine the county’s leadership.

“Kirinyaga residents will not be sold out politically. They will elect leaders of their choice,” she said.
She also cautioned against the use of hired crowds and political violence, warning that such tactics will not translate into electoral success.
“There are people who will come asking for your votes backed by others. Some individuals are paid to shout down leaders, but those noises will not translate into votes,” she said.
“Those who are paid to become goons should not allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians. We want peaceful campaigns here in Kirinyaga.”
Ngirici, who previously chaired the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), finished second in the 2022 Kirinyaga gubernatorial race, where incumbent Anne Waiguru garnered 113,088 votes against her 105,677.
She was later appointed chairperson of the Kenya Seed Company board in July 2023 by then Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.
Her latest political stance positions Kirinyaga as a key battleground in the evolving Opposition strategy, as alignments ahead of 2027 continue to reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
