July 14, 2026 - Wajir County has been recognized as the Best Inclusive County in Disability Inclusion nationally, with Governor Ahmed Abdullahi pledging stronger collaboration to advance the rights of persons with disabilities across Kenya’s nomadic counties.
The award was officially handed over on Tuesday by the Northern Nomadic Disabled Persons Organisation, NONDO, together with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, NCPWD, during a courtesy call to the governor’s office.
The honor had earlier been presented by NCPWD during the National Disability Dialogue Conference held on May 13–14, 2026.
NONDO said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss strategic areas of collaboration aimed at advancing disability inclusion.
Key outcomes included Wajir County’s willingness to partner with NONDO in hosting the 15th Edition of the Desert Wheel Race and its flagship activities, and discussions on establishing a Disability Chapter within the Frontier Counties Development Council, FCDC, framework to mainstream disability across all FCDC county programmes.
Governor Abdullahi also reaffirmed his commitment to work closely with NONDO to strengthen disability-inclusive development in Wajir and other nomadic counties.
Commending the governor for his leadership, NONDO noted that “meaningful disability inclusion is achieved through visionary leadership, strong partnerships, and collective action,” and expressed optimism that the commitments made will translate into tangible actions that promote equal opportunities, accessibility, and meaningful participation of persons with disabilities.
