Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – The United States government has donated a fleet of tactical vehicles to the Somali Police Force on Wednesday, specifically for use by units tasked with counterterrorism operations, to enhance their operational capabilities in combating insecurity in the country.
The fleet includes Toyota Hilux and Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles, both known for their reliability in rugged terrains and commonly used in security and military operations. The vehicles were formally handed over to Somali Police Commissioner Major General Asad Osman Abdullahi by U.S. Deputy Ambassador to Somalia, Steven Gillen, during a brief ceremony held in Mogadishu.
According to a statement from the Somali Police Force, the donation was provided through the U.S. Department of State’s Counterterrorism Bureau. These vehicles will be allocated to specialized units leading the charge against militant groups operating in Somalia, including Al-Shabaab and ISIS affiliates.
“These vehicles will be utilized by our counterterrorism units, which are currently undergoing major upgrades,” said Major General Asad, expressing his gratitude for the continued partnership with the United States.
The U.S. has long been a key security partner for Somalia, providing training, equipment, and operational support to both police and military forces involved in efforts to secure the country and combat terrorism.
