Belgium, 7 January 2026 — At an extraordinary meeting in Brussels called to discuss Israel's recent recognition of Somaliland, the African Union once more reiterated its support for Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The meeting, which involved high-level officials from AU member states, emphasized Africa's unified stance in defending Somalia’s sovereignty. The representatives condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, calling it a violation of international law and the principles of state boundaries. They reiterated the importance of preserving Somalia's unity and territorial integrity.
The leaders also expressed full support for the federal government’s efforts to promote unity in Somalia. They also highlighted that Israel’s decision contradicts the established norms of international diplomacy.
The AU members stressed that Somalia's stability and that of the Horn of Africa depend on the protection of the country’s sovereignty and territorial unity.
