Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – A delegation from the United Nations’ Electoral Support Group (IESG) visited the headquarters of the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) on Tuesday in Mogadishu. The delegation, led by Deryck Fritz, head of IESG, was welcomed by NIEC Chairman Abdi Karim Ahmed Hassan and other commission members.
The purpose of the visit was to assess and support the ongoing voter registration efforts across the country. During the visit, the delegation toured the NIEC’s operational facilities, including the Operations Room, Call Center, and Data Center, which are integral to the voter registration process.
The IESG delegation commended the NIEC for its swift establishment and the progress made in the voter registration campaign. They particularly highlighted the ongoing registration efforts in Banadir, South West, and Galmudug regions, noting the effectiveness of the campaign within a short timeframe.
The continued collaboration between the NIEC and IESG remains essential in Somalia’s efforts to establish a transparent and inclusive electoral system. The international support is vital to ensuring the successful completion of voter registration and the eventual implementation of the one-person, one-vote system.
