Kenya, January 24 2026 - Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on young Kenyans to rally behind President William Ruto, saying the Head of State has demonstrated the leadership needed to steer the country towards first-world status.
Speaking in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, Atwoli said his position on President Ruto had changed since the 2022 General Election, admitting that the President’s record in office had convinced him to reconsider his earlier opposition.
Atwoli told residents that Kenya’s progress depended on unity and sustained support for national leadership, arguing that political divisions could slow economic growth and industrial development.
“I was among his strongest critics. I opposed him openly and said many harsh things,” Atwoli said. “But when you look at what he has achieved in just two years, it is more than what we failed to do in five or even ten years.”
The trade unionist said President Ruto’s policies point to a long-term plan focused on industrialisation, investment and positioning Kenya as a competitive global economy.
He urged critics to give the President space to implement his agenda, noting that even older generations now recognise the value of stability in leadership.
“When asked whether Ruto should leave office, our answer is no,” Atwoli said. “What he is talking about — Kenya becoming a developed, first-world country — is achievable.”

Atwoli emphasised that young people stood to benefit most from an economy driven by manufacturing, infrastructure expansion and both local and foreign investment.
“He is bold and not distracted by politics of removal. His focus is on jobs, industries and opportunities for Kenyans,” he said. “Young people deserve a future in a country that attracts investment and supports growth.”
According to Atwoli, Kenya’s journey to economic transformation requires consistent leadership, tough reforms and policies that prioritise productivity and industrial growth.
“The person with the capacity to take Kenya to that level is William Ruto,” he said.
